College scholarships for women age 50+ (Preference for WOMEN VETERANS) Deadline to apply is March 30, 2012

On behalf of Lone Star Legal Aid and our efforts to serve low-income women and low-income women veterans, we are pleased to pass along this information which we hope will serve those whom you serve. Below please find details about a scholarship opportunity for low-income women age 50 and older; the scholarship contains a preference for women veteran applicants.   Although Lone Star Legal Aid is not affiliated with the scholarship or those making the selections, we are circulating this public information in the hopes that it will benefit those eligible to apply.  As always, it is a pleasure to collaborate in serving those who have served our Nation.

The AARP Foundation Women’s Scholarship Program is helping win back opportunity for low income 50+ women by funding education, training, and skills upgrades that can lead to better employment and increased financial security for women and their families. Scholarship winners are chosen by an independent selection committee established by the AARP Foundation.

To Be Eligible to Apply You must be: Priority is given to: Relevant Factors include:  
  • A woman age 50 or older by March 30, 2012
  • Low-income
  • Pursuing a technical or vocational education, an associates degree, or a bachelor’s degree
  • Enrolled in a U.S. Department of Education accredited school or technical program within 6 months of the scholarship award date

 

  • Women Veterans
  • Women who have been unemployed for more than one year
  • Women in low-paying jobs with no career opportunities
  • Women raising the children of another family member

 

 

  • Financial need
  • Personal circumstances and achievements
  • Educational and career goals
  • Challenges faced in life
  • Impact of scholarship

LSLA honors Texas veterans and service members by prioritizing their unique civil legal needs through our initiative, “Lone Star Lawyers for Lone Star Veterans”. We engage LSLA staff, community partners and pro bono attorneys to provide free legal services, advocacy and education to veterans and service members. LSLA is the fourth largest legal service organization in United States; we provide free civil legal services to low income individuals and families who have immediate civil legal needs but cannot afford an attorney. LSLA offers a broad range of free civil legal services to qualifying individuals, including family matters, child advocacy, education and civil rights, public benefits, health care access, consumer issues, home ownership, tenants’ rights, employment, estate planning, probate matters and disaster relief. LSLA serves one-third of Texas, its service area spans 76 counties throughout Texas and Arkansas and includes Fort Hood, Houston and Waco, regions which have high concentrations of veterans and military families.
